Welcome to my site.

I am an award-winning freelance writer and science-communications consultant.  A journalist and biologist by training, I cover a wide range to topics specializing in basic research, natural history, and workforce issues affecting women scientists.  I am also the editor of ScienceWriters, published by the National Association of Science Writers.  In 2003, I was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for “leadership and significant contributions to the public communication of science and technology.”  I live near San Diego, Calif. and teach science writing courses through UC San Diego Extension.  An avid backpacker, I have slept in the dirt of six continents and, together with my husband, celebrated the turn of the millennium at the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
